Mayall Telescope Environmental and Structural Assessment
NOIRLab intends to remediate and mitigate potential hazardous materials identified on the exterior of the Mayall 4-meter Telescope building at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). To support this effort, NOIRLab engaged M3 to provide assessment services that will inform and facilitate future design and remediation planning.
The project began by conducting an environmental impact assessment to evaluate the potential implications of the remediation work. This was followed by a detailed structural and architectural assessment by of the existing building, focused on identifying deterioration, damage, or design deficiencies that may affect the remediation process. M3’s team documented current conditions and evaluated the feasibility of planned improvements with respect to both performance and safety.
In parallel, M3 facilitated completion of a regulatory compliance review to assess the facility’s alignment with applicable codes and standards, including OSHA requirements, environmental regulations, and the International Building Code (IBC). The goal of this review was to ensure that all future work will proceed in a manner consistent with current safety and accessibility standards.
All findings were compiled into a detailed assessment report, which includes prioritized recommendations to guide NOIRLab’s remediation strategy. The report provides a foundation for informed design, planning, and implementation of mitigation measures.
