Schmidt Sciences Review & Advisory Services
Engineering Review and Advisory Services, Ground-Based Astrophysics Observatories [ Schmidt Sciences, Multiple Sites ]
Schmidt Sciences is building a portfolio of ground-based astronomical observatories to support long-term astrophysics research initiatives, representing a diverse and ambitious program of complex scientific infrastructure spanning multiple sites and instrument types. Recognizing the value of independent technical review, Schmidt Sciences engaged M3 to provide engineering review and advisory services across the observatory portfolio, drawing on M3’s decades of experience with observatory enclosures, facility infrastructure, and remote-site civil and structural systems.
As the initial activity under this engagement, M3 participated in the Final Design Review for the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA) telescope project, including a site visit to the prototype antenna installation at Owens Valley Radio Observatory and subsequent review sessions at Caltech in Pasadena, California. M3’s team contributed engineering observations and recommendations across structural, architectural, and infrastructure disciplines throughout the review process, supporting the project team in identifying technical risks and strengthening the design ahead of construction.
M3 is continuing to support Schmidt Sciences on additional ground-based observatory initiatives under this ongoing advisory relationship. M3’s value in this engagement is rooted in its ability to provide substantive technical review precisely where observatory projects are most complex: enclosure design and mechanisms, facility and support building systems, site infrastructure, and civil engineering for remote high-altitude environments. For program managers overseeing a broad portfolio of observatory projects, M3 offers a single experienced partner capable of engaging meaningfully across the full range of engineering disciplines that define world-class scientific facilities.
