MPG/ESO 2.2 Meter Dome Repair

M3 Engineering provided architectural and structural engineering services for the retrofit and modernization of an existing observatory dome located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The project began with a detailed site visit and 3D laser scan to document existing conditions of the rotating enclosure. The resulting point cloud data enabled the creation of an accurate as-built model used to assess the structure, geometry, and interface systems supporting the dome.

Building on this foundation, M3 performed design and engineering of the proposed retrofit, including structural analysis of the rotating ring girder and development of retrofit details such as splice modifications and new stiffeners. The scope also included preparation of a complete steel fabrication package with engineering drawings, calculations, material lists, and digital models to support precise fabrication and installation.

In the final phase, M3 provided full-time, on-site construction management services, overseeing contractor activities, verifying conformance with design intent, and coordinating installation efforts throughout construction.
