Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST)
The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is a state of the art solar observatory perched on top of the Haleakala Volcano in Maui, Hawai’i. M3 was responsible for engineering all disciplines (Civil, Structural, TEKLA steel fabrication drawings, Architectural, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, etc.) for the Fixed Base Enclosure, Telescope Pier, and adjacent Support and Operations Building. M3 also participated in the construction administration process.
Situated at 10,000 feet above sea level, this observatory was designed for both extremely high winds as well as earthquake loads. The facility is a high-seismically designed steel framed structure with metal wall and roof panel cladding at the support facilities and pre-cast concrete cladding at the Fixed Base Enclosure. The Telescope Pier is unique in that it incorporates a hybrid design of a cylindrical reinforced concrete lower half and a steel framed conical upper half.
